  • 2012 – The Year of Others

I don’t make New Year’s resolutions anymore. They didn’t work for me primarily because they were selfish and had more to do with what I wanted to get from the world than what I was willing to give to the world.

  • George Clooney Has The Answers.

George Clooney at event of The Ides of March

I was a baseball player in school. I had a good arm, I could catch anything, but I was having trouble hitting. I would be like, “I wonder if I’ll hit it; just let me hit it.” And then I went away for the fall, learned how to hit, and by my sophomore year I’d come to the plate and think, “I wonder where I want to hit the ball, to the right or to the left?” Just that little bit of skill and confidence changed everything. Well, I had to treat acting like that. I had to stop going to auditions thinking, “Oh, I hope they like me.” I had to go in thinking I was the answer to their problem. You could feel the difference in the room immediately. George Clooney

I spend whole sessions on this topic as I believe that many actors function under the misconception that the audition is about their reading and that’s it. Ownership of the room is probably the most important and the most ignored aspect of auditioning. The thing is, you can’t fake presence – you can’t pretend to be confident if you’re not and you can’t be the answer to our problems if you haven’t solved your own.

Presence is based on preparation. Your confidence in the room is directly tied to your confidence in the piece you are bringing into that room.

You need a way of preparing your auditions that makes you the authority on the role and allows you to walk in to the room with the strength of one who has the answers to our problems.

This is the level at which job getting actors operate. Check in honestly – are you and your auditions up to it?

Much more on this topic coming soon…

  • Actors We Love

    Jessica Chastain, Ryan Gosling

Ryan Gosling and Jessica Chastain are the hottest actors of the year so far and as the article below states they will likely be around for a long time to come.

What breaks them apart from other stars that come and go quickly is that they are actors – not stars - actors – well trained and dedicated. They didn’t spend the time before they were well known clubbing, dating the world and randomly seeking attention. They studied their craft, they became well explored people and more interesting actors. They have arrived at their big moments ready.

I couldn’t be happier, (especially in this age of reality “stars” where if you  hire the right publicist to market your sex tape you can become famous), that quality still counts.

Keep studying, keep exploring, keep learning, keep growing and like these two wonderful actors, you will keep working.
